The Carl Stenberg Local Government Research and Professional Development Fund honors the extraordinary career and legacy of Dr. Carl W. Stenberg, whose more than 50 years of public service and scholarship helped shape the theory and practice of local government management across the nation. During his 23 years at the UNC School of Government, Carl served as director of the UNC MPA program, founded the Public Executive Leadership Academy (PELA), mentored generations of public servants, and advanced the field through his teaching, research, and leadership.
Established in recognition of Carls enduring commitment to public service, leadership development, and applied research, the fund supports UNC Master of Public Administration students pursuing careers in local government. The fund expands access to high-impact professional and scholarly opportunities that prepare students to become effective local government leaders.
The fund may support:
Student presentations of individual or collaborative research at professional conferences focused on public administration and local government.
Professional Work Experiences (PWEs), internships, and other experiential learning opportunities with local governments, particularly when compensation does not meet a living wage.
Graduate assistantships and research projects that address local government management challenges, emerging issues, and innovative practices.
