James Svara specializes in local government politics, management, ethics, innovation, and sustainability. He has a special interest in the roles and responsibilities of elected and administrative officials in local governments. He is the author of numerous articles and book chapters, including Justice for All: Promoting Social Equity in Public Administration (2011), More Than Mayor or Manager: Campaigns to Change Form of Government in America’s Large Cities (with Douglas Watson, 2010), and The Facilitative Leader in City Hall: Reexamining the Scope (2008). He is a fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration and an honorary member of the International City/County Management Association. A former board member of the Alliance for Innovation, Svara has served on the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, North Carolina State University, and Arizona State University. Svara received a BA in history from the University of Kentucky and an MA in international relations and a PhD in political science from Yale University.
